NICRO Annual Report 2006-2007

| Message from the National Chairperson: Mr Walter Petersen |
In September 2005 NICRO celebrated 95 years of dedicated service to the people and communities of South Africa.
This occasion provided us with the ideal opportunity of reflecting on the past and a few of our many, fine accomplishments.
An acknowledged leader in its field, NICRO has a proud history of innovative, effective service delivery within the
criminal justice sector. NICRO introduced the concept of restorative justice to South Africa and was the first organisation
to adopt an alternative approach to offending. For many decades we have vigorously promoted reconciliation and
healing, and dedicated our services to restoring the balance affected by crime.
NICRO will be remembered for pioneering numerous service delivery models that have stood the test of time, been
integrated into mainstream practice and incorporated into legislation. Many of these, most notably early probation
service, pre- and post-trial community service and diversion, continue to form the backbone of South African
contemporary criminal justice practice and, more specifically, juvenile justice.
NICRO’s achievements are indeed noteworthy, but, in the words of Alberta Lee Cox, “It is not enough to be good if you have the ability to
be better”. NICRO has the desire, the zeal, the ability and the opportunity to be better. To this end NICRO has embarked on a brave, new
journey involving fundamental changes in the structure, design and performance of the organisation in order to achieve a far greater, more
marked impact on reducing the levels of crime and violence in South Africa.
As NICRO stands at the dawning of a bright new future, I would like to pay tribute to and commend our dedicated Executive Director, Ms
Soraya Solomon, for her vision and the passion with which she is spearheading the NICRO change process.
At this time I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the staff of NICRO, both at National Office and throughout the nine provinces.
Thank you for the considerable investments that you have made this past year. All that NICRO has achieved is directly attributable to you
and your unfailing commitment to the organisation and its mission. Thank you for this.
Special mention must be made of our Provincial Management Committees for serving NICRO so passionately and tirelessly over the years.
We are deeply indebted to you for your wise counsel and for embracing our vision for the future with such enthusiasm. With you at the helm
the change process will be successfully carried through to provincial level.
It is in this spirit of gratitude that I salute the National Executive Committee members for their dedication and loyal support. Thank you for
your time, skills, energy and inspiration.
In conclusion I would also like to draw attention to and laud our government, the corporate sector, trusts, foundations and other grant makers,
local and international, as well as our individual donors and partners for their support of NICRO. We are deeply grateful for your generosity.
Come to the edge.
We might fall.
Come to the edge.
It's too high!
COME TO THE EDGE!
And they came,
and he pushed,
and they flew.
- Christopher Logue
