Diversion in South Africa has come a long way since the early 1990s when the first formalised programmes were initiated. Several significant developments, such as the formation of the Inter-ministerial Committee on Young People at Risk (IMC), has resulted in the creation of new diversion options as well as the revision of existing ones.
This booklet aims to update practitioners and other interested parties on new diversion options that have developed since 1994 as well as providing a basic introduction to diversion as an option for people in trouble with the law. NICRO would like to express its sincere appreciation to those individuals and organisations who have made diversion a reality in South Africa.
